The Best Hiking and Running Trails in Colorado Springs
Discover the local trails, views, and hidden gems that make Colorado Springs one of the best outdoor cities in the country.
If you’re new to Colorado Springs, one of the first things you’ll notice is how everyone here seems to love the outdoors. Whether you’re a weekend hiker, a sunrise runner, or someone who just enjoys fresh mountain air, this city is full of places to explore.
Let’s take a look at some of my favorite trails and parks around town that are perfect for getting outside, staying active, and soaking in the Colorado beauty.
🌄 1. Garden of the Gods
Location: West side of town | Trail Type: Easy to moderate loops
This one’s a local favorite (and a must-see if you’re PCSing here!). With its massive red rock formations and wide, paved pathways, Garden of the Gods is perfect for walking, light hiking, or even stroller runs. The views of Pikes Peak from the Central Garden Trail never get old.
💡 Local Tip: Arrive early. Parking fills fast, especially on weekends. The park opens at 5 a.m., so sunrise runs here are magic.
🌲 2. Red Rock Canyon Open Space
Location: Just south of Garden of the Gods | Trail Type: Moderate, pet-friendly
If you love Garden of the Gods but want fewer crowds, this is your spot. With a network of trails weaving through red rock cliffs and old quarry walls, Red Rock Canyon Open Space feels like a secret version of the big park next door.
💬 Pro Tip: Try the “Mesa Trail Loop”, it’s about 3 miles and offers amazing city views.
🏞️ 3. Cheyenne Mountain State Park
Location: Near Fort Carson | Trail Type: Moderate to challenging
Right by the base, this is the go-to spot for Fort Carson families who love the outdoors. You’ll find miles of well-marked trails for hiking, biking, and running, with wildlife sightings and peaceful mountain views.
🌟 Local Tip: The Blackmer Loop (around 4.5 miles) is a local favorite: shady, scenic, and just challenging enough for a great workout.
🪵 4. Palmer Park
Location: Central Colorado Springs | Trail Type: Easy to moderate loops
Don’t let its location fool you. This park is huge and full of trails. It’s a quick escape right in the middle of the city, and the Templeton Trail offers one of the best panoramic views of Pikes Peak.
🐾 Bonus: It’s one of the most dog-friendly parks in town, with a large off-leash area.
⛰️ 5. The Incline (for the brave!)
Location: Manitou Springs | Trail Type: Intense
If you’re feeling ambitious, this is the ultimate Colorado Springs fitness challenge. The Manitou Incline climbs over 2,000 feet in less than a mile using old railway ties as steps. It’s no joke, but the feeling when you reach the top (and see the entire city below you) is worth it.
💪 Pro Tip: Go early, bring water, and take it slow your first time. Trust me — everyone stops to catch their breath!

🧭 Why Locals Love These Trails
What makes Colorado Springs special isn’t just the mountain backdrop, it’s how accessible it all is. You can go from your driveway to a world-class trail in minutes. It’s part of what makes living here feel less like a move, and more like an adventure.
Whether you’re here temporarily for a PCS or planting long-term roots, these trails will quickly make you feel at home.
🌻 Final Thoughts
Colorado Springs is truly an outdoor playground. Every season offers something new. Golden aspens in fall, snow-dusted peaks in winter, wildflowers in spring, and perfect trail weather in summer.
So lace up, grab your water bottle, and get outside. Your next favorite trail might be just around the corner.
